The Mother Hips have seen it all. Formed in 1991 at Chico State University in Northern California, this rock 'n' roll band has been together for nearly 12 years acquiring cult status in their native Golden State and helping to form a new genre of rock called "California Soul". They've taken their fair share of drugs then kicked their habits; played with everyone from Wilco to Johnny Cash; worked with countless record labels and dealt with more music industry nonsense than the average band could handle. It wasn't until singer/guitarist Greg Loiacono told his bandmates that he was taking an indefinite hiatus from the band that the future of the Hips became uncertain. BEAUTY ROCK: Live At The Catalyst finds the band in rare form. On January 31st, 2003 The Mother Hips took the stage at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, California well aware that this would be one of their last shows before calling it quits. "We were just cutting loose," says lead singer Tim Bluhm. "It just didn't matter anymore. It didn't matter what people really thought of it. We were just playing for the pure joy of playing." In a candid interview, four months following The Catalyst performance and the demise of the band, Tim and co-founder Greg Loiacono give us a first-hand account of their 12-year career and the dramatic changes the band went through which shaped the unique sound of the Mother Hips.
